Smack dab in the middle of Wisconsin you will find a small flat town that has a lot to offer. This town is surrounded by two rivers, the Plover and the Wisconsin. It is also a massive college town which revolves around the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and Stevens Point Area Senior High. There are parks everywhere you turn in Stevens Point and the outdoor life is fluent all throughout the area.
Stevens Point is even the home to Wisconsin’s largest man made park, Schmeekle Reserve. This is a massive park located right next to the University, it is filled with a massive man made lake and beautiful paths which can be used for both hiking and biking. The lake that is placed in schmeekle is the perfect spot for fishing in spring, summer, fall and winter, it is also a great lake for doing recreational activities like kayaking or canoeing.
Another amazing park that is in Stevens Point is located in downtown right next to the Wisconsin River. This park spans over the length of 6 football fields and is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown square. There is even live music that takes place from time to time which is located on a stage right near the river front. There are plenty of picnic tables where you can enjoy lunch and watch the boats float on the Wisconsin River. If you are planning a picnic then you’re going to want to make sure and go to People’s Meat Market which offers tons of great local meat choices and is the only family owned meat market in Portage county.
Stevens Point is also one of the biggest biking communities in all of Wisconsin. The trails that run through the town are absolutely beautiful. They have trails for the experienced and for the non-experienced and they each offer something special. The green circle literally runs through the woods and over the hills and along the river, this bike trail will allow you to see all of the beauty that Wisconsin, Stevens Point has to offer. The blue circle is essentially a dumbed down version of the green which still allows you to see beautiful scenery without such an excruciating bike ride.
There is nothing like eating a wonderful lunch after a morning on the bike trails. For this I would strongly suggest going to the Polonia Cafe , this is a quaint cafe tucked away in Stevens Point which will take your breath away. If you happen to be in Stevens Point on Friday Polonia also has an amazing fish fry served until 8pm.
