Moving into a new place can be an exciting time. Maybe you will be living in a new neighborhood or even city, you’re heading out on your own for the first time or you’re shacking up with your significant other. But even with the anticipation of new experiences ahead, the actual process of getting all of your things from one place to another is stressful… and almost always problematic. Here are a few moving horror stories from people around the world to make you feel better about your experience.
Between dealing with boxing up everything you own, communicating with cranky movers, and lugging heavy stuff up several flights of stairs, most people have some crazy stories to tell. And I’ve rounded up a couple great ones for your reading pleasure. Fortunately, most of the time, even with the headaches that come along with the process, it’s all worth it in the end.
“I was moving from one tiny Manhattan apartment to another, and thought there was no reason to hire a mover or ask friends for help. Well, after an exhausting day of getting most of my stuff to my new place, I realized my IKEA loft bed wasn’t going to make it out the door. I had to saw the legs off all by myself. Which meant I had to hold the bed up with my back while I hacked.” – Justin Goldner, logistics
“When moving from one apartment to another in Hoboken, NJ, where parking is a constant nightmare, I paid the town to install “No Parking” signage for a four hour window so the moving truck could pull up outside of my place. Well, as the truck arrived, there were cars parked in our designated spots, totally disregarding the postings. So my moving day nightmare began by calling the police to tow the cars along with getting charged an extra two hours by the moving company who had to circle the block while they waited.” – Shana Ecker, Editor, HuffPost Home
